Science

Science in post-primary school focuses on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills through an integrated approach that covers subjects like biology, chemistry, and physics. The curriculum emphasizes the “nature of science,” including how it works, scientific investigation, communication, and its societal role, with new assessment methods for students to demonstrate their skills in scientific research. This approach is part of a broader STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education framework aimed at preparing students for a 21st-century society and economy.

Junior Cycle features a focus on the “nature of science,” including carrying out investigations and communicating in science. Learning outcomes are organized across contextual strands like the Physical world, Chemical world, Biological world, and Earth and space. There is a new focus given to the Nature of science which aims to promote greater engagement and thinking about how science works; carrying out investigations, communicating in science, and the role and contribution of science and scientists to society.
