Geography at Finn Valley College

Geography is offered at Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle at Finn Valley College. Students study Geography at Common Level for Junior Cycle. Senior Cycle Geography is studied at Ordinary and Higher Levels.

Junior Cycle Geography in Finn Valley College aims to develop a deep understanding of the world, including both physical and human elements. Students explore diverse topics, from geological processes like volcanoes and earthquakes to human interactions such as economic activities and urban development. The curriculum focuses on the development of geographical skills, including map reading, data analysis, and critical thinking. Assessment involves a combination of a final examination, Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs) where students conduct their own geographical inquiries, and an Assessment Task that reflects on their learning. This approach encourages students to become geographically literate, capable of understanding and engaging with the complexities of their local and global environments.

Senior Cycle Geography builds upon the foundations of Junior Cycle, offering a more in-depth exploration of geographical concepts and processes. Students delve into complex interactions between the physical and human environments, studying core units such as patterns and processes in the physical environment, regional geography, and the Geographical Investigation and skills unit. The curriculum allows for elective and optional studies, enabling students to specialise in areas like economic activities, the human environment, or global interdependence. A key component is the Geographical Investigation, which requires students to conduct independent research using their geographical skills in a real world, practical environment.  Assessment includes a written examination and the mandatory Geographical Investigation (worth 20% of final grade), fostering critical thinking, analytical skills, and a comprehensive understanding of our dynamic world.
