Junior Cycle
Junior Cycle Engineering focuses on developing students’ understanding of and skills in the applications and impact of technologies in the world around them. The new Junior Cycle aims to achieve this through three inter-connected strands: Principles and processes, Design application and Mechatronics.
Throughout the three years, students will develop and use a variety of skills including safe work habits, project management, organisation, problem-solving and engineering techniques.
The assessment of Engineering for the purposes of the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA) will comprise of:
- two Classroom-Based Assessments: Engineering in action, and Research and development
- a project (70%)
- a written examination (30%)
Senior Cycle
The skills developed from Junior Cycle will help students develop an engineering mindset that can be further enhanced at Senior Cycle. Practical resourcefulness, creativity and design in the planning and development of technological projects are emphasized. There are two main areas of study: Workshop processes and Materials and technology. Engineering is assessed at two levels, Ordinary level and Higher level, by means of a written examination, a project and a practical examination.
