Student Support in Finn Valley College ensures every student feels safe, supported and valued.

At Finn Valley College, student support is a key priority. We are committed to creating a positive, inclusive environment where every student can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. From wellbeing initiatives to academic guidance, our dedicated support team works closely with students to help them overcome challenges, build confidence, and reach their full potential.

Student Support

The school has a dedicated Pastoral Care Team. Each year group is led by a Year head who supports and monitors student progress. Each student group meets with their Class Tutor in Tutorial Class every morning in a bid to provide a supportive and positive environment for all students.

The Pastoral Care system in the school includes a dedicated Student Support Team that takes responsibility for the extra pastoral care of individual students when the need arises.

Home School Community Liaison Coordinator

The HSCL Coordinator offers support to parents in the form of home visits providing help and advice for parents and running courses to meet the needs of the parents. The HSCL also offers support to students having difficulties in school. The HSCL liaises with the community and community organisations in an active manner.

Career Guidance & Counselling Services

Our two Career Guidance Counsellors offer a wide range of services and supports to all students. Both counsellors meet with students on an individual basis to support them in programme and subject choices, the selection of college courses, career choices and to offer counselling where the need exists. We also work closely with outside agencies and supports and students have opportunities to enjoy visits to 3rd Level Institutions and informative talks from Guest Speakers from a variety of sectors to help support them in their future careers.

Behaviour for Learning Teacher

  • The Level 1 : Whole School Support
  • Level 2: Targeted Intervention
  • Level 3: Intensive Individualised Support

The three tiered approach aims to address the behavioural, social emotional, academic literacy and learning needs of students in a positive and supportive manner.

Check and Connect Programme

Check and connect is a mentoring programme that aims to promote student engagement at school and with learning. It is being that ‘One Good Adult’ for one student. Staff volunteer fifteen minutes of their time weekly to link in with a student to help build a positive relationship with the student and encourage a student’s regular school participation in academic, social and emotional learning.

Wellbeing in FVC

Finn Valley College has a proud tradition of caring for its students. We hope to ensure a Wellbeing Culture is enshrined in all aspects of school life so that students have opportunities inside and outside of the classroom to have educational experiences which will contribute to their wellbeing, such experiences to include physical, social, emotional, creative  and intellectual wellbeing events. These events may be co-curricular, extra-curricular or stand alone wellbeing initiatives.
