“Our Commitment to a Sustainable Future: Finn Valley College and the Green-Schools Programme”
Our Green School Programme is a widely recognised environmental education initiative. It’s designed to promote long-term, whole-school action for the environment. The programme aims to increase environmental awareness and create sustainable habits among students and staff.
It is a student-led programme that emphasises student participation and leadership. The school works on various environmental themes, including, Litter and Waste, Energy , Water Travel, Biodiversity and Global Citizenship. It has a significant impact on raising environmental awareness in our school community.
Our team comprises our students, Co ordinator Ms K McGranaghan, Ms Butler, Ms McGranaghan and Ciaran O’Neill who are delighted to assist with the programme.
What we’ve been up to this year…..
The group continues to promote the Battery Waste Initiative run nationally with WEEE Ireland.
TY students and the Green School Committee Members continue to weigh and sort our waste. They are proactive in encouraging staff and students to use the correct bins for food waste, recycling and general waste.
16 Solar Panels were installed in the school which is making a difference to the environment and reducing our electricity bills. To avoid waste we are turning off lights and devices when not in use.
We are continuing with our Positive Sustainable Practice Projects via guest speakers, quizzes, surveys and action days.
We are linking in with the Community such as The Tidy Towns, our local Recycling Plant, Donegal County Council and Cúnamh Charity Shop.
This year we were awarded our first Green School Flag, for making great progress and awareness on the theme of Litter and Waste
